Age Calculator

How old are you, exactly?

Enter your birth date to get your exact age — plus a few fun numbers most people never bother to work out.

How this age calculator works

Enter your date of birth and choose the date you want to calculate from. The calculator gives your exact age in full years, months, and days, while automatically accounting for leap years and different month lengths.

You can use today's date to answer "how old am I?" or choose another date to check your age on a past or future day. This can be useful for birthdays, eligibility dates, applications, graduations, anniversaries, and other date-based milestones.

Why "age" isn't as simple as subtracting years

A naive age calculation — just subtracting birth year from the current year — gets it wrong roughly a quarter of the time, because it ignores whether your birthday has actually happened yet this year. Someone born on November 20, 1995 is still 30 (not 31) on October 1, 2026, even though 2026 minus 1995 equals 31. This calculator compares month and day, not just year, to avoid that off-by-one error.

Leap years add another layer: about once every four years, February gets an extra day, which shifts exact day-counts if you're measuring total days lived rather than years. Someone born on February 29th technically only has a "real" birthday once every four years — legally, most jurisdictions treat their birthday as either February 28th or March 1st in non-leap years for things like contracts and legal age of majority.

Common reasons people check exact age

Beyond simple curiosity, exact age calculations matter for things with real thresholds attached: age of majority for legal contracts, minimum age requirements for a job, school, or visa application, insurance and pension eligibility that kicks in at a specific age, and sports or competition age-bracket cutoffs that use an exact date, not just a birth year. In several of these cases, being even one day under an age threshold can matter, which is exactly why a precise, calendar-correct calculation is more useful than a rough estimate.

The "as of" date field is particularly useful for these situations — you can check what your age will be on a specific future date (a wedding, a graduation, an application deadline) rather than only checking your age today.

A few numbers worth knowing about your own age

Once your exact age is calculated, the total number of days you've been alive is a genuinely interesting number to look at — most adults have lived somewhere between 7,000 and 30,000 days, and milestones like your 10,000th day (around age 27) or 20,000th day (around age 54) pass without most people noticing, since nobody naturally tracks age in days.

Frequently asked questions

Why would I calculate age "as of" a different date?

It's useful for eligibility rules, visa applications, contracts, or figuring out how old you'll be on a future date, like a wedding or graduation.

Does this account for leap years?

Yes. The calculation is based on actual calendar dates, so leap years are handled automatically — no manual adjustment needed.

How is age legally calculated for someone born on February 29th?

This varies by jurisdiction. Most commonly, a "leapling's" legal birthday is treated as either February 28th or March 1st in non-leap years for purposes like reaching the age of majority — though the specific rule depends on local law.

Is my birth date stored anywhere?

No. The calculation happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or saved.

This tool provides general date calculations for informational purposes and isn't a substitute for official age verification.

Worked example

Born 12 March 1998 and checking the age on 26 September 2026: the person has completed 28 years. From 12 March 2026 to 26 September 2026 is 6 months and 14 days, so the full reading is 28 years, 6 months and 14 days. Changing the as-of date by one day can change only the leftover days, not the year, until the next birthday.

Leap-year birthdays

29 February exists only in leap years. For official age, many civil systems treat 1 March as the birthday in common years. This calculator states that convention on the result row so you are not left guessing which midnight flipped the year count.

What this page is not

It is not a legal age certificate, a driving-licence check, or a medical age assessment. Those processes use documents and local statutes. Use the number here to understand the calendar arithmetic, then follow the form you were given.
